First Portuguese magazine with video

This morning I've just bought Sabádo Magazine, funny thing is that today's edition presents the first publicity campaign with the Video In Print (VIP) technology in Portugal. I've been looking and the magazine brings an LCD 5 mm by 3.7mm integrated in two paper sheets, we can watch see six videos with sound and control them with few buttons that make some basic functions.

Inside I've found the speaker, a battery, a 512mb flash disk and some other funny stuff as you can see. We can connect this stuff on the PC to put the battery on charge or change the videos, etc. See photos above.

Just having some fun with this stuff. See the video here.

a Jigsaw : Red Pony

PHP and Ruby on Windows Azure

Windows Azure is Microsoft’s Cloud Computing offering. It is more than a simple scalable hosting option as it is truly a platform as a service offering. This allows you to focus on your application rather than the configuring and managing your infrastructure whether you are writing C# or VB.NET or even languages such as PHP or Ruby which are first class citizens in Windows Azure. The Windows Azure Platform includes Windows Azure, which is the OS and hosting environment for web and background services, as well as non-relational storage, queues, and a blob storage for everything from videos to mountable virtual drives. Additionally, the Windows Azure Platform includes SQL Azure, a fully relational database as a service, and Windows Azure AppFabric for industry standards compliant identity management and a service bus for message passing
.

But there remain the questions around why, when and how you should move to the cloud, especially if you are using PHP or Ruby. Should I put everything in Windows Azure? Do you have to convert everything you have to ASP.NET? Do you have to write code specifically for Windows Azure? What if my current applications depend on MySQL and/or memcached?

There’s a lot of good news here as it is relatively straight forward to get running in Windows Azure. Once your application is running, however, now you need to look at how to fully leverage the platform offerings architecting for the best usage of the different roles and the various aspects of the Windows Azure offerings such as the AppFabric and SQL Azure. This will help your application make the most efficient usage of CPU, bandwidth, storage and all of the things that cost in a cloud hosting scenario.

In this half day session, we will begin with the why of Windows Azure talking about when it makes sense to make a move and what the prudent migration paths are for your organization.  During this time we will tour the various aspects of Windows Azure. Then we’ll delve into the technical aspects of how to run your PHP/Ruby code on Windows Azure. Once we have that mastered, we will move onto leveraging the Windows Azure platform to its fullest.

120.000 Feet jumping with Silverlight

Red Bull Stratos, a mission to the edge of space, seeks to surpass limits that have existed for 50 years. Felix Baumgartner will undertake a stratospheric balloon flight to 120,000 feet and attempt a record-breaking freefall jump that is expected to reach – for the first time in history – supersonic speeds.

The mission, driven by Red Bull and a stellar team of scientists and specialists, will deliver valuable lessons in human endurance and high-altitude technology.

The project has just been launched, and the Silverlight site is live: http://redbullstratos.com

Silverlight 4.0 and Gaming

Silverlight 4.0 Beta is out there since PDC'09. Lately I've been putting my hands in this latest version and trying to learn more about Silverlight. Well this version comes with a quite few improvements, and you probably have heard most of them. Mostly they are LOB, but there I noticed that are some nice things for game developers as well:

  • Performance;

  • Full Keyboard Access in Full Screen;

  • Right-Click Mouse Events;

Video and Sample Code: Right-click Mouse Events

  • Mouse Wheel Events;

Video and Sample Code: Handling MouseWheel Events

  • COM Interoperability;

Video and Sample Code: COM Object Access in Trusted Applications

  • Bi-directional and complext text, Right-to-left support in controls

Video and Sample Code: BiDi and Right-to-left Support

 Full list of features is at Tim Heuer Blog here.

Microsoft Research : Project Tuva

Project Tuva is a video application developed by Microsoft Research. In it are gathered history, interactive video education, science and rich Internet applications. Project Tuva is an interactive video experience that makes learning about science relevant and exciting means of records of authors, researchers and experts.

It was launched with a series of lectures of the famous physicist Richard Feynman at Cornell University in 1964. In the videos are embedded layers of contextual information such as searchable transcripts and subtitles, extra information synchronized with the video, relationships with Internet resources and the ability to take notes while watching. Quite different from the YouTube clips. To better understand the project check out the website.

I'm running for Imagine Cup - Poland
